Council Update
Inaugurated 55th Elected Six Nations Council
New Elected Council Officially Begins Term
12/07/10 – Inside the Six Nations Polytechnic Grand River Room, a traditional prayer by Cam Staats and a gospel prayer by Pastor Ralph Garlow opened the 55th Elected Six Nations Council inauguration. Approximately 85 people attended.

Justice of the Peace Norma General-Lickers presided over the inauguration of all 12 Councillors and the Chief. Each swore the same oath of office before speaking about their priorities for their three-year term in office. Councillors spoke about lobbying to get more funding for youth programs and seeking sustainable economic development among other issues.

In his inaugural speech, Elected Chief William K. Montour acknowledged the youth in the audience. He pointed out that the future belongs to the young people. With good minds, the community can rise above differences and, with a good mind, can bring hope to the youth, he continued. He also recognized special guests: Brantford Mayor Chris Friel, Brant County Councillor John Wheat and Haldimand County Councillor Fred Morison.

Upon an invitation by Chief Montour, Mayor Friel, who came with six Councillors, said working together strengthens relationships. With the direction the communities are taking, the group has a powerful voice that no one can silence or ignore, he added.

As the Inauguration ceremony approached its end, Council Directors described services provided by their departments and highlighted their priorities and issues. Topics ranged from the water plant to infrastructure.

The audience congratulated Council through applause. Then community members, directors and guests joined the receiving line to shake hands with each Council member. Many people engaged in light conversations and enjoyed refreshments as the event came to a close.
