114th Bread and Cheese Day: The Tradition Continues
|
|
May 23, 2011 – Like Bread and Cheese itself, it’s almost an annual tradition that it rains on this Annual Day of Celebration.
Those who braved the rain enjoyed the parade of floats, the midway and then as the name of this day says it all, lined up for an Annual Tradition of receiving Bread and Cheese. This day has become a day with family and friends.

A day of celebration for people of all ages, the 2011 Bread and Cheese Day reached its 87th year.
Queen Victoria established a tradition of providing annual gifts to Six Nations community members in honour of their allegiance during the War of 1812. In 1924, the first elected council revived the tradition with gifts of bread and cheese.
The popular annual holiday is a part of Community Awareness Week. From May 20th to May 30th, Six Nations Council Departments, community organizations and businesses showcase their programs, services and products.
A list of Community Awareness Events is posted on www.sixnations.ca homepage
