In Honour of the Treaties – Community Members invited to Ottawa Rally
|
|
01/19/12 – On January 24, First Nations will meet with Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Ottawa and he is expecting company. That’s why Six Nations Elected Council has hired three buses for the trip to Canada’s capital city. The ride is free to community members and members of the media.
While the Jan. 24 morning meeting is underway, Chief William Montour wants community members to join a rally in support of our pursuit for justice on all Six Nations Treaties and Rights. The people who choose to go to Ottawa will be standing with community members from many other First Nations in Ontario. Numbers matter to let the Harper Government know we want resolution to our Land Rights and only Canada can solve these issues with us.
Let your messages and opinions be known. Bring signs bearing messages: Stop Assimilation, Drop the Colonial System, Enter into Nation to Nation Relationship are some suggestions. Bring signs calling on Canada Must Improve Relationships with First Nations. Put the Canadian government on notice that their relationship with First Nations must change for the better.
The First Nation – Crown Gathering on January 24 can provide an opportunity to insist on a respectful political relationship with the Canadian governments. As well, Canada must recognize the jurisdiction First Nations have over their traditional lands, their resources and their citizens.
Over the past 400 years, a number of Treaties were agreed to between all parties in order to establish peace, friendship and economic stability. The Silver Covenant Chain and the Two Row Wampum were the first agreements between First Nations peoples and Europeans. The Royal Proclamation of 1763 recognized the rights of the original peoples. This was followed by the Haldimand Treaty in 1784 and later the Treaty of Ghent in 1814. The 1982 Canadian Constitution recognized all inherent and treaty rights of First Nations.
Chief Montour wants to see the Canadian government abiding by all these treaties and any other agreements with the federal government. He organized the transportation for community members.
People who want to make a difference are asked to register at the Elected Council Administration Building. People can also register by phoning 519-445-2201. The number of buses going to Ottawa will be based on the number of people who have signed up. People are advised to arrive at the Community Hall parking lot by 3:45 a.m. The buses leave at 4 a.m. and are expected to return around 11 p.m.
