Chief's Office

Chief William Montour’s Inaugural Address – December 7, 2010

She:Kon Skennenko;Wa Ken

On behalf of the 55th Elected Council, we thank the voters who have placed their confidence in us to advocate for the interests of Six Nations today and for the future.

The mandate for the 55th Elected Council is for the period December 7, 2010 to December 2, 2013. The focus of this mandate can be summed up in two aspects – education and economic development.

Education is not strictly of the classroom variety. We must find ways forward together. Our whole community has to collaborate to give hope back to our youth for a healthy, prosperous future.

We must make our community safe again. People who find themselves hooked on drugs, alcohol and violence need to be shown that there is merit in becoming productive community members. In 1999, we were a “caring community”. We need to make this description real.

The future belongs to our young people. We have to rise above our differences and focus on the future. By setting in motion a caring and sharing vision with good minds, we can give our youth hope. This will need a radical approach to social development.

The new education will require us to study together to find a positive path for our future.

Our future depends on finding economic opportunities to move beyond community apathy. We must never say “we can’t do that” or feel that anything is beyond our grasp.

We have a dynamic community filled with very talented people. A new era is upon us. This is the “Green Age”. It holds tremendous promise for our community and our neighbours.

We have to return to that state of mind that “by the sweat of our brows, we can achieve anything”. We must remember our great-grandparents, our grandparents, our fathers and mothers, aunts and uncles who made southern Ontario the supplier of manufactured products for the world.

By coming together as supportive communities, the future will belong to our young people in the whole region to build safe, healthy, sustainable and interactive communities.

I believe the Creator has given us strength and fortitude to achieve our wildest dreams. We only need to believe in ourselves.
