New Ontario Health Minister Visits Six Nations
03/04/10 – Meeting with Six Nations Elected Council for the first time, new Ontario Minister of Health Deb Matthews was asked to discuss Ambulance Services.

Minister Matthews was shown a video outlining the basic level of care Six Nations Paramedics are allowed to administer under Health Ministry Regulations. In contrast neighbouring municipalities have advanced care services.

Trained SN Advanced Care paramedics cannot perform life saving procedures leaving community members at greater risk of serious illness or death.

Bureaucratic stumbling blocks over almost 10 years stand in the way. Minister Matthews promised to unravel this situation.

Following a brief Question and Answer session with Council the Minister toured the Whitepines Wellness Centre.

Minister Matthews spoke to Six Nations Health Services Director Ruby Miller in the Dialysis Unit where six treatment stations stood idle.

The Six Nations Health Foundation is purchasing furniture, blanket warmers and televisions for the treatment room. The Health Foundation has donated more than $70,000.00 to get the unit up and running.

The Minister also toured the Family Health Team Area, which has one of only three First Nations Family Health Teams in Ontario.
