Chief William K. Montour made opening statements at an important community meeting in the Six Nations Community Hall
A Global Solution to Six Nations Land Rights
08/18/10 – At a community meeting, Six Nations Elected Council introduced a new direction for seeking resolution to Six Nations land rights. About 100 people attended the Aug. 18 meeting. A second meeting on Aug. 19 gave community members two options to find out about land rights injustices and legal, political, international and communications strategies.

This new approach is entitled Land Rights: A Global Solution. In his opening statements, Chief Montour said that arriving at this point is a culmination of 35 years of research.

He also made it clear that this document is not written in stone and it is a means to address the best interests of Six Nations. Council accepted feedback at the meetings and welcomes written suggestions and observations.

“All we need is our agreements honoured,” said Phil Montour, who is a land rights expert. In his slide presentation, he listed facts related to numerous fraudulent land transactions and thefts of Six Nations revenue and land by Indian agents and the Canadian government.

Council has restarted its 1994 lawsuit and Council members have met and lobbied Members of Parliament and Members of Provincial Parliament regarding A Global Solution. Other strategies include taking Six Nations land rights to the international level and direct action. That gets Canada’s attention, said Councillor Ava Hill.

When negotiating begin, Six Nations will put together a team that includes experienced negotiators, Six Nations Elected Council, Confederacy Council members, Mohawk workers and the Men’s and Women’s Fires. “We all need to be a part of this, said Chief Montour.

The negotiation process will have timeframe, substantive discussions and negotiations in good faith, he added.

Council will also continue to lobby Canada and Ontario to give their negotiators mandates that will meet the needs of Six Nations.
