Council Update First Nations Fire Chiefs from Across Ontario with Ontario Fire Marshal Patrick Burke Six Nations Hosts Inaugural Meeting of First Nations Fire Chiefs 11/13/09 – Six Nations Fire Chief Michael Seth and his Department hosted a two-day meeting with several First Nations Fire Chiefs to establish a framework for a First Nations Fire Chiefs Association. During sessions held on Nov. 12 and Nov. 13, participants discussed challenging issues include lobbying for more adequate funding from Indian and Northern Affairs Canada. Other agenda items included recognition of the need for an association, purchasing fire trucks, and existing relationships. Patrick Burke, Fire Marshal of Ontario, gave a presentation on Ontario’s Fire Protection and Prevention law, the provincial requirement for smoke detectors and new construction methods that present new challenges for firefighters. The top Ontario fire official voiced his support for the First Nations Fire Chiefs Association.
