A Flu Shot Reminder from Six Nations Public Health
01/17/11 – As influenza season makes its way toward its peak and then eventual decline, the Six Nations Public Health Office would like to remind everyone that the Annual Flu Vaccination is still available for those who wish to be inoculated.

Last flu season saw the H1N1 or swine flu as the predominant strain of flu during what the World Health Organization categorized as a pandemic. In this year’s flu season, Influenza A was found in 98.3 per cent of positive flu tests. Of those, 94 per cent were the H3N2 strain and six per cent were H1N1, or swine flu. (source: cbc.ca)

Unlike swine flu, the H3N2 strain tends to hit older people. Many of the latest outbreaks reported were in long-term-care facilities. (source: cbc.ca)

Six Nations Public Health would like to remind everyone about the main benefit of receiving a flu vaccination. Once a person is immunized, the risk of spreading the flu virus to others goes down dramatically.

The Public Health’s Flu Vaccine Campaign is: PROTECT YOURSELF…YOUR FAMILY…YOUR COMMUNITY…GET IMMUNIZED.

Criteria for receiving the flu immunization are:

• Must be 6 months of age or older
• Have an immunization card/record
• Must be in good initial health to receive the immunization (No fever or acute illness)

Flu Vaccination will be available until April 30. Office hours are Monday to Friday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.
