Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario Launches First Nations Public Library Week at Six Nations
02/14/2011 – Ontario’s Lieutenant-Governor the Honourable David C. Onley officially launched First Nations Public Library Week on Valentine’s Day. He was joined by Minister of Tourism and Culture the Honourable Michael Chan, and Brant MPP Dave Levac.

Chief William Montour opened celebrations at the community hall. Among the rows of books, youth and adults alike can find and benefit from researching health issues, economics and the environment, he said. When knowledge is used, people can live longer lives, he added.

The Six Nations Library is also an important resource for language revitalization, pointed out Chief Montour.

In his remarks, the Honourable Mr. Onley said he is continuing a literacy initiative he began before he was named Lieutenant-Governor. His intention was making sure students had the same opportunities as others who have libraries. “A book can change a life,” he added.

Library Board Chair Donald Lynch said the board is striving to reach increasing needs by stretching the budget. Of the 133 First Nations in Ontario, only 51 have libraries, he added.

Public libraries are the key to opening up the future, said the Honourable Mr. Chan. The Ministry of Tourism and Culture spends $1 million on library development, mostly in smaller and remote communities. Access to education and to literacy can lead to success, he added.

Sadie Buck filled the hall with her voice before the Lieutenant-Governor read a short story to the Emily C. General students. Later the students gave a social dance exhibition. Ms Saunders read from Long Powwow Nights.

After the readings, a slide show presentation featured prominent First Nations artists, musicians, actors, and athletes including Derek Miller. Their message was: libraries are important because books can offer enjoyment and discovery. The slogan that will carry this message is “Join Us & Speak Up for First Nation Public Libraries”.
