Six Nations Discusses Consultation and Accommodation Agreement
|
|
03/16/11 – Over 250 community members attended a meeting where the Consultation and Accommodation Agreement with Brantford was discussed. Six Nations Elected Council hosted the meeting to hear the thoughts and opinions of people in the community.
Elder and acclaimed storyteller Mona Staats opened the meeting with a prayer for togetherness and for respect and gratitude for everything that surrounds us in this world.
Chief William Montour asked for respect when comments were made and stated that Council will take people’s comments into consideration. Then he read the agreement which was sent to mailing addresses within the Six Nations Community. This is a way to sit down and talk to Brantford, he said.
Later in the meeting, Chief Montour shared some financial information. Within the Haldimand Tract, a total of $3 billion is paid in property taxes, development fees, gas tax and many more fees. Coming home from a Chief’s funeral in Owen Sound, he saw a great deal of development. Consultation and Accommodation is not followed even though the Supreme Court of Canada requires it, he added.
At the two and a half hour meeting, a variety of opinions were expressed on the agreement and on various issues affecting Six Nations now and in the future.
The meeting was a forum for Elected Council to hear opinions and ideas. Chief Montour said the agreement is not negotiations but is a chance to talk about what benefits there will be to Six Nations.
Council will have a good discussion about comments received and will make their decision public, stated Chief Montour.
