Six Nations Hosts Strategic Planning Session on Palliative Care
12/02/10 – The Six Nations Polytechnic Grand River Room served as the location for a wide variety of medical professionals who were participating in a strategic planning session on palliative care. They attended to share and gather information specific to care on Six Nations of the Grand River.

Participants represented the Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation, West Haldimand General Hospital, Juravinski Cancer Centre, Six Nations Health Services Long Term Care and Community Care.

Six Nations of the Grand River is one of four Aboriginal Communities identified as a research site. The study will be financed by a five-year, $1.8 million Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Aboriginal Health Intervention Grant. A research team based at Lakehead University will under take the study through its Centre for Education and Research on Aging and Health.

Dr. Kevin Brazil, Director of St. Joseph’s Health System’s Research Network is one of the two principals assigned to the study. Dr. Mary Lou Kelley of Lakehead University is the other principal investigator.

During the planning session at Polytechnic, participants discussed care provision priorities and stronger networks involved in providing care to Six Nations community members. The session’s agenda included presentations and group sessions.

Two questions were also posed to attendees:

1) What are the specific considerations that communities, service agencies and providers need to be aware of in providing palliative care to Aboriginal People?

2) What would you recommend as the next steps for enhancing and integrating Aboriginal Hospice palliative care services?

The strategic planning session was sponsored by the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integration Network (HNHB LHIN) and the Hospice Palliative Care Network.
