Six Nations Water Plant Contract Signed
|
|
09/28/11 – After 11 years of working with the federal departments responsible for First Nations, Six Nations Elected Council has entered into a contract with Maple Reinders. The firm will oversee construction of the new Six Nations water treatment plant.
Chief William Montour, Mr. Reinders and Mr. Kundrat enjoyed pleasant conversation before put pen to paper on the tendering contracts.
Construction was previously underway but was stopped due to federal funding delays and regulations. To fill the gap in funding, Council secured a $15 million loan from the Royal Bank. This opened the door to move on contracts for the plant on Johnson Road.
Chief Montour and Mr. Reinders were all smiles noting that this company has worked with First Nations across Canada. For Maple Reinders, this will be their third project on Six Nations territory.
In 1987, a plant was constructed and was equipped to serve 9,000 people. As the population grew, the plant eventually became a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week operation.
The existing water plant is running three times over its capacity. As a result of delays, drops in water pressure are putting essential services at risk in Ohsweken. Once constructed, the new plant will provide a stable and safe source of potable water for the community’s 17,000 residents.
Construction is expected to begin in October.
