Community Forum to Highlight World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
06/15/11 – Rooted deeply within the traditions of Six Nations ancestry and culture handed down from generation to generation is the commitment to always take care of our Elders. Over their lifetime, they shared wisdom and provided guidance.

June 15 is designated World Elder Abuse Awareness Day to recognize the impact of mistreatment of Elders. Making the day’s activities possible was Six Nations Long Term Care/Home and Community Care. Sponsorships were provided by Ganohkwasra Family Assault Support Services and Six Nations Police for the free Community Forum to highlight Elder Abuse.

Elder Abuse can take many different forms. In particular, Elders are most vulnerable when they are dealing with finances.

Representatives from the Bank of Montreal and Six Nations Police were on hand to describe what to watch for and advised Elders to immediately report to the authorities to protect themselves and their finances. Police representatives spoke about safety in the home. Other sessions included emergency planning and traditional knowledge.

The Bingo Grannies performed a skit bringing out some lighthearted comedy, followed by a video from Long Term Care.

The Community Forum also included information booths complete with free mugs, buttons, and literature. Each item highlighted the importance of preventing and stopping Elder Abuse.
