Consultation and Accomodation
As a result of the Supreme Court of Canada’s key court cases Haida Nation, Taku River Tlingit First Nations, Mikisew Cree, Tsihoquot’in and Keewatin decisions, the Land Use Unit developed a consultation and accommodation sector. These key court cases confirmed the legal obligation for surrounding municipalities, developers, etc. to consult and accommodate First Nations; even where the claim has not been proven.

A Consultation and Accommodation Process Team (CAP) was established to meet with the several developers/proponents that would like to do business within Six Nations’ Territory. A Consultation and Accommodation Policy was then created in 2009. The CAP team has been very effective in opening the lines of communication with the various outside agencies both private and public.
