Six Nations of the Grand River Mourns the Loss of John Monture

Last Friday, December 16, 2022, Six Nations community member John Monture passed away at the age of 78.

John was an active and treasured member of the Six Nations community. A constant champion of Six Nations veterans and their contributions, he served as the president of the Six Nations Veterans Association for over twenty years. After a career as a carpenter and working on buildings such as the Ohsweken Plaza and the townhouses behind the plaza, John retired and began farming and was a founding member of the Six Nations Farmer’s Association.

John was a talented baseball, lacrosse, and hockey player his entire life.

“I was deeply saddened to hear of John’s passing,” said Chief Mark B. Hill. “He was such a kind, caring man, and a valued member of our community. John was my nominator when I ran for Chief in 2019, and I will always be grateful for his confidence in me and my journey.”

Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council sends their most sincere condolences to John’s wife, Vera, his children, and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John’s impact on this community will not be forgotten and he will be dearly missed.
