For Immediate Release: July 9, 2026 – OHSWEKEN, ON The Six Nations of the Grand River 59th Elected Council (SNGREC) has repealed the Six Nations Cannabis Control Law and Cannabis Control Regulations, effective immediately.

This decision is informed by ongoing challenges with the Six Nations regulatory system including resources and enforcement. SNGREC also considered community feedback received during a formal public comment period (May 29, 2026 to June 30, 2026) which provided an opportunity for community to share their feedback on a proposed transition away from cannabis regulation.

In response to Canada’s legalization of cannabis, the Six Nations Cannabis Control Law and Regulations were established in 2021. The goals were to support, at Six Nations, public health and safety; sale and acquisition of safe products; law and order; and an awareness of health risks related to cannabis.

Since the enactment of the Six Nations Cannabis Control Law and Regulations by the 57th SNGREC, amendments have been adopted by both the 58th and 59th Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Councils to strengthen the regulatory system. However, ongoing challenges persist including compliance, enforcement, and financial sustainability. After investing $4.86 million dollars in cannabis regulation on the territory, there was only one licensed business in the community at the start of the comment period.

As part of the repeal strategy, SNGREC has directed the Six Nations Cannabis Commission Corp. to undertake the required steps to dissolve the corporation.

SNGREC remains committed to protecting the health, safety, and well-being of Six Nations of the Grand River community members.

SNGREC will provide further updates through official SNGR communication channels in the coming weeks.
